After some mis-types for sizes, I've got a chassis design that fits in the size requirements for a FIRST robot. That also explains the crazy weights I've been getting! This one is down to a very easy-to-manage 13 pounds. The part on top is clear polycarbonate, for when other robots drive on top.

Triangular Collector

This is one idea for how to build the "effector" for the robot. The lower two pipes will be stationary, and the upper one is on a slide. Both will have rubber grips attached to them. The two pieces jutting out on the back side would be connected to a piston and a spring, with the piston requiring compressed air to open, but only a valve opening to close down on the tube.
