It sounds like a dumb question, but with Peachtree, Palmetto, VCU, Chesapeake, and (barely) Florida all showing open slots and Palmetto being on District Five's spring break (which led 1618, who has the same break, to take Chesapeake over Palmetto), the answer didn't seem obvious, either.

That still remains up in the air, with the heartbreak that Columbia lost the regional to Clemson.
After taking a weeklong break after Okra Strut, we will be starting our regular meetings again on Monday evening.
There have been a few discussions already but nothing decided yet.
Some have expressed interest in Chesapeake, Florida and staying with Palmetto but there are a lot of factors involved before deciding.
Good time to start a poll for the team.
D5, post which regional you would like to see us attend this year and why you would like to compete there.
Please leave all the disagreement postings out of this poll and express your opinions during the upcoming meetings to discuss them in person.
This is only for where you want to go & why.

I’ll start with my preference, staying with Palmetto.
Since I have seen no major progress in fundraising yet, any other regional would increase the cost of traveling with the higher gas prices and may put a burden on our budget.
Having to travel for the first time in D5’s existence, is now going to cost considerably more to attend any regional (motels, chartering transportation, food…) plus getting parents/mentors who can get time off to travel will be an additional obstacle that we have not faced in the past.
Palmetto has always been one of the better regionals with a great atmosphere and I think Clemson can maintain the high quality. I feel we can do well this year at Clemson by saving our resources and investing them into our robot.
If we are successful in the very near future with some fundraising, I would be open for Florida or Chesapeake.

I suppose I can make a passable case for Chesapeake. I attended Chesapeake last year as a volunteer, which left me with some impressions about the event by comparison with Palmetto:
The venue: Chesapeake is held at the Halsey Field House on the campus of the US Naval Academy. It's old, and it sprang a couple of leaks over the event, but I thought it was a good venue overall. I haven't been to Littlejohn Coliseum, so I can't comment there--but I have been on Clemson's campus, and as a traveler I know which one I'd rather visit. As a further bonus, Chesapeake allows food from outside to be brought into the pits. Advantage: Chesapeake
The teams: Honestly, I thought the two were pretty well-matched. You've got some elite teams, a decent-sized midrange, and the smattering of BLTs that don't do much beyond move. The teams at Palmetto might know the team better, but name recognition alone doesn't do much for teams. Advantage: Draw
The drive: Columbia to Clemson is 138 miles on Google Maps; Columbia to Annapolis is 513. In my 27-MPG car at $2.60 a gallon, that fuel cost is $26.58 compared with $98.80--but remember that you're splitting that several ways across the occupants of a particular vehicle. I've done the drive to Annapolis in one day, though it would require extra hotel nights on either end unless you have some dedicated drivers. Advantage: Palmetto
Hotels: Priceline shows hotels in Clemson for $66 a night, $50 a night if you're willing to go 20 miles out. Annapolis is showing $84 a night. Advantage: Palmetto
Dates: Palmetto is Week 5, which is District Five's spring break. The last time 1293 attended a spring break regional, a good portion of the team was gone on trips here or there. As a mentor of 1618's squad last year, I wholeheartedly encourage getting as many hands on deck as possible. Chesapeake on Week 3 allows for that, while still giving FIRST enough time to sort out the field's early-season bugs. Advantage: Chesapeake
In my mind, Chesapeake stands to be more of a sure thing this year in comparison to Palmetto. The main advantages Palmetto has over Chesapeake are financial ones, and many of them can be offset or reduced through fundraising and planning. It might mean washing more cars, doing more demonstrations, or just generally hitting the bricks, but it can be done. (Or, at least for the sake of the Capitals, I hope it can be done.)

I'd personally prefer to go to Peachtree, but that could be the fact that I'm an Atlanta native blooming through. ![]()
I'm familiar with the area considering I almost moved to Gwinnett, and I think we could manage to make the money to go to it, and it'd give us a chance to get to know a few of the teams in Georgia... which would be fun. Georgia Tech is also a great engineering school, and has a robotics team, and I think it'd give a great insight to the school for those of the team interested in engineering as their major. [This is SO me supporting my favorite football team to btw. Go Jackets!]
Gas may be a problem, but if nothing else, going to Georgia is closer than Annapolis and would give a chance to bond without going exceedingly far, and so far the dates are unannounced so we could hope that competition wasn't on Spring Break [depending on what you feel is the best time to go].
Again, these are just my thoughts. I personally like the thought of going to Peachtree. ![]()

Spring Break... though sounds great in theory (won't have to miss school) It wouldn't be the best idea going then b/c of all the missing people
But also going to Atlanta or where ever does cost gas money, then again we planned on going to a second regional.
Thus stated, if our fundraising does as well as we hope, we can easily make it to Chesapeake Bay which should be fun (i. e. bush gardens!!!!!!!)

My 2 cents?
Palmetto's going to require an overnight trip now, one way or another. That being said, if we're going to pull an overnight, let's go for broke (though, not literally.) I'd say go with Chesapeake.
The one problem I can foresee is fundraising. Chesapeake WILL cost us more, for the bus travel and the lodging overall. As of now...fundraising is, dare I say it, nonexistant. A team can't run without money, which we severely lack.
Conclusion: If we get on the ball and actually get some money, go for Chesapeake! We'd have a much better time. If, however, you feel like sticking with Palmetto, which, as we can see from 1618, several teams are abandoning...that's our decision. As of now? We're going for Palmetto.
Fundraising, where art thou?

Let me start by replying that fundraising is at my house on Friday at 11am! Also, could this topic be moved to the regional section of the forums?
I also wrote there that we are for sure going to Palmetto, as it is still the closest Regional. Anything else WILL be raised by us.

Thanks, Emily.
I talked wiht Mr.Orr today about whether our registration fee could be given directly to Chesapeake rather than Palmetto. (In the event that we are unable to do both, which would still be preferable, yes?)
The only thing that would make the difference is the cost of travel. I need to research, call bus companies and hotels, etc., to find out the exact difference between going to palmetto and chesapeake. Once that is done, we will go from there; it is up to the district as to whether they would also be willing to pay that difference. I should have an answer by next week (it would be sooner, but b/c of 3 day weekend, Mr. Orr won't have a chance to contact the district until at least Monday). Just wanted to let you all know that I am looking into this, even though there probably won't be much more to say until I get the estimates.

Fundraising? While that would be great, it probably would be easier to make it individual based.
I remember all of my two night orchestra trips costed me about 350.
Individual payment needed to cover your hotel and your portion of the bus ride (whatever the trip divided by 40 is). To go to something like Chesapeake I just suggest that each person going needs to atleast cover part of their trip, maybe money from a large group fundraising could be split among those interested in going.

I was already thinking of that. As nice as it would be to attend on fundraising alone, it's near impossible with the high cost of regional registration, in addition to travel expenses. Hopefully, the leftover costs will be small, but there will most likely be something that we will have to pay ourselves. Just trying to make that as little as possible.

Or, take the ROTC approach: any funds raised by one person get divvied up slightly. If, for example, you sold $5 car wash tickets, then some of that would go into the general pot while some would be earmarked specifically for the seller's travel. Fundraising alone wouldn't get you on the bus (as some of the misbehaving cadets learned), but it was a nice little boost for those who worked hard.
Oh, and don't forget to check with the district about transportation. Beside the fact that they probably know a guy, there might be something in the district fleet that meets your needs. (Unless plans change, 1618 is planning to make the drive in a Richland One minibus. Apparently, the ones they have don't require a CDL to drive.)

also we could do something similar to the way the band does it, individuals fundraise say like patron sales and the profit goes to the individual cost until their cost is covered, then the rest goes to the band, and the sponsors go to the team as a whole and that is divided among the team members and other costs.

ooooooh I see what youre saying.
I wasnt aware that there is a limit on OE. Doesnt it have to do with your computers harddrive?
Hey all. I need some help finding mic stands similar to the ones used by radio stations. A friend suggested that I use lamps from walfart and modify them. Does anyone know where I can get those mic stands from that would cost less than 75 bucks? I can reenforce them if I need to.
